Cantonese embroidery (廣繡) includes embroidery produced in these regions: Guangzhou (廣州), Foshan (佛山), Nanhai (南海), Panyu (番禺) and Shunde (順德) in Guangdong Province. Its history dates back more than 1,000 years. The earliest record that was found had been written in the Tang dynasty. Cantonese embroidery is famous for varied needling techniques and stitches. It is usually applied on silk and satin and used to make embroidery paintings, costumes for Cantonese opera and decorative household goods. In 2006, Cantonese embroidery was listed as national intangible cultural heritage.
