About the Exhibition:

 

Lingnan region, once considered to be a barbarian place, overturns this predication with splendid and delicate art. Cantonese embroidery, originated in Lingnan, is popular among collectors due to its sophisticated techniques. It can be found in the collections of Qing emperors, as well as those of foreigners, as a popular type of exported embroidery. In Cantonese, the pronunciation of “splendid” (錦繡gam2 sau3) is similar to “feeling” (感受gam2sau6).

 

Through this exhibition, we hope to show you the glorious periods of Cantonese embroidery, its development from the 20th to the 21st century, as well as the contemporary masterpieces that emerged from it. This exhibition showcases 15 artworks of Cantonese embroidery from the Qing dynasty to the early 21st century, featuring splendid embroidery paintings from imperial collections, exquisite embroidery fans produced for export trade in the Qing dynasty, political embroidery portraying Mao and contemporary masterpieces.
